Unearthing History, One Page at a Time: Freedom Seekers
Freedom on the Move is a database of North American newspaper advertisements placed by enslavers and jailers. Learn how to transcribe the “runaway ads” that were printed in newspapers by those who claimed people as their property. Taken collectively, the ads constitute a detailed, concise, and rare source of information about the experiences of enslaved people.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop; a limited number are available on site.
Unearthing History, One Page at a Time is a collaborative transcription series where volunteers convert historical documents into searchable digital text, supporting researchers, genealogists, and the preservation of history for future generations.
This program takes place on Saturday, June 13 at 10:30 am at the Hopewell Branch Library.
