Unearthing History, One Page at a Time: Women of the Early Republic
Discover American history through the daily lives of four women: Anne “Nancy” Hume Shippen Livingston, Rebecca Lloyd Nicholson, Margaret Bayard Smith, and Anna Maria Brodeau Thornton. You’ll access the Library of Congress’ By The People campaign to transcribe letters, diaries, commonplace books, and other papers. These elite women recorded first-hand experiences of the new political landscape caused by the American Revolution and the foundation of the new American republic, all while their lives remained circumscribed by the prevailing social order.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop; a limited number are available on site.
Unearthing History, One Page at a Time is a collaborative transcription series where volunteers convert historical documents into searchable digital text, supporting researchers, genealogists, and the preservation of history for future generations.
This program takes place on Monday, May 11 at 6:30 pm at the Hopewell Branch Library.
